About

Josephine’s works are featured in interiors across Australia and internationally. Josephine combines her formal training in colour design with her passion to create opportunities for individual interpretation and shared experience about the story behind a landscape.

Sharing her time between the east coast, the open road and her home, Josephine Hill often succumbs to the allure of open spaces. A background in colour design and education influences her unique style as she uses hues to interpret her experiences of a place in unexpected ways. The result is a joyful and dramatic collision of pattern and colour, giving life to the story of the places we share.

Josephine Hill

“When I create, I feel that I’m connecting threads. As much as I can, I want to imbue my work with the presence of the human experience and spirit of wonder, but also to share the stories behind what can be seen.

When we see pictures of a landscape, we’re inclined to recall a specific set of experiences that may or may not be shared. In my work, I try to dig a bit deeper and deconstruct the singular representation of a place so a wider array of experiences can be interpreted through multiple lenses.

What I express through abstract shapes, lines and colour offers opportunities for people to reflect and consider their own understanding of a place, even if they’ve not experienced it physically. I hope this encourages people to add their own threads as part of the artistic narrative. ”
